Get Rewarded for Your Research

Researchers earn money for doing research on descriptions of technology found in patents – they may be professional researchers or have knowledge of the technology or have access to foreign language publications. Researchers range from subject matter experts to individuals who simply enjoy the work, but they all benefit. Applying existing knowledge, new research and their networks to our research requests (called Studies) they can earn between $5,000 and $50,000 in rewards.

Up to $50,000 in rewards is a lot of money, and we really do pay.

The potential to earn thousands of dollars has provided substantial income to Researchers. Since November 2008, we have paid over $615,000 to various winning Researchers.

Researchers look at our Studies and see if they have an interest in the patents listed. If they identify research, that research could be valuable validity evidence relating to that patent.

Once Researchers have identified patent validity evidence, they are only 3 steps away from passing it on to Article One Partners -- and joining the race for the reward.

Step 1

Log in and click “Respond” on your Study of choice. If you are not yet a Researcher, sign up here – you need to be logged in to submit your research!

Step 2

Researchers complete a short eligibility questionnaire to confirm that they are able to legally participate in any given Study. Tip: Researchers can click “Respond” within any Study to preview that particular Study's qualification form.

Step 3

Researchers upload files or provide links to their patent validity evidence and add information on the reference(s) they are submitting. Researchers also have the opportunity to highlight the relevant portion of their submission. Finally, Researchers are invited to submit more validity evidence until the Study's expiration date.

What happens next?

After the Study's expiration date is reached (usually 2 to 6 weeks from its posting), Article One's client analyzes the collection of patent validity evidence received from the community. We do not provide a legal opinion, and collaborate with our clients as they determine the best patent validity evidence. Once their analysis is completed, we will announce whether there is a winning Researcher for the Study.

We strive to make the announcement as soon as possible – generally up to 8 weeks from the expiration date.

“The joy of doing research with the possibility of a monetary reward (being paid for doing what I love) is what brings me back. It is meaningful work in many ways.”
