Tips for Researching

Although patents can be dense, there are straightforward methods for getting to the heart of the matter.  These tips come directly from our top Researchers and can help lead you to the winning references!  Learn more about each topic in our Researcher Tips Whitepaper.

1)  Build background knowledge of the technology area

2)  Patent claims hold the most detailed and useful information

3)  Find references from before the Latest Date for Prior Art (LDPA)

4)  Use every piece of information available

5)  Combine broad and narrow resources

6)  Full text references are more valuable than abstracts

7)  Identify the details in "Requirements to Match"

8)  One excellent reference is better than ten good references
